Nicholas French hails from the French Family of Hair: a long line of talented artists who have influenced the way hairdressers think, breathe, and imagine hair for the past 100 years. Nicholas’s father was a pioneer of modern hair design evolvement, and Nicholas has made a significant contribution to present-day hairdressing.
Nicholas has circled the world, creating over 2,000 seminars and shows plus groundbreaking photo shoots to inspire and develop hairdressers globally. He has received numerous nominations and awards, including four NAHA Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award for his creative leadership and lasting impact on the hairdressing industry.
With a career that covers print work, film work, runway shows, and TV commercials with famous directors Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Adrian Lyne, Michael Seresin, and others, Nicholas has appeared on the Oprah show, Today Show, Asia Today, and Today Show Australia, to name just a few. His celebrity clients have included everyone from film stars to royalty.
In his studio in the Hamptons and on location, Nicholas’s Back to the Future program is inspirational, with game-changing ideas and techniques from the past translated into the future. It is truly a journey of the French Family’s dynamic history of hair from the past to the present day.
Interviewed by Winn Claybaugh, Nicholas describes his journey from novice to award-winning stylist and educator, his creative process, and the mentors who helped him along the way.
